5 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Might Be Blowing Warm Air

First, don’t panic just yet. Warm air isn’t always a sign of a serious problem. There are multiple possible contributors to your warm air that have quick and easy fixes. You just have to know what to look for. Before calling a professional, see if these common issues are what’s keeping your cold air at bay.

Thermostat is on the Wrong Setting

It happens. You’re in a hurry and hit the wrong button. Your kid gets cold and thinks the “heat” button is the solution rather than turning the air down. Just make sure it’s set to “cool.” While you’re there, also check that it’s on “auto” and not “on.” When your thermostat is set to “on,” your air conditioner will keep blowing air out after the temperature has reached your desired level without cooling it.

Outside Unit is Clogged

How does the outside unit look? Is it covered with leaves and dirt? Are bushes getting thick around it? During the spring and summer months, take care to continually clean your unit and keep bushes trimmed away from it.

Evaporator Coil is Dirty

Has it been a while since you changed your air filter? If it’s extra dirty, your evaporator coil may have gotten extra dirty as well. Replace your air filter as soon as possible and call a professional to do the rest.

Outside Unit Lost Power

There are two reasons your unit may lose power: either the circuit breaker or emergency shutoff switch. First, try resetting the breaker. Then if your outside unit continually trips the breaker, this is a sign of an electrical problem and needs the attention of a professional.

If the breaker isn’t the problem, try the emergency shutoff switch typically located on the wall next to your outdoor unit. Turn it all the way off and on again and wait for the unit to kick back on.

Freon is Low

If your unit is covered in ice, you probably have a Freon (a refrigerant) leak. Freon is what cools the air and needs to be replaced before your air will cool again. Other signs you may have a Freon leak include a super high electric bill, house taking forever to cool, and hissing or bubbling noise around your outside unit. Unfortunately, this is not an issue you can fix but rather one you will need to call a professional for.

If you’re in the Middle TN area and either none of these quick fixes worked for you or you need professional help, give Hatton’s HVAC Solutions a call. We know that hot air in the summer can be a bother and will be over as soon as we can to make you comfortable again!
