Spot Mold in Your HVAC System Before it Hurts You

Mold is more common in our homes than we’d like to think. All mold needs is moisture and it can grow in as little as 48 hours! Even though HVAC systems constantly have air going through them, moisture can build up in the bends of your ductwork or evaporator coils and in your drip pans. Spot mold in your HVAC system early, before your health suffers from it.

Effects of Mold

Mold affects everyone differently, but it starts by creating dust and allergens in the air. These can cause respiratory and sinus problems, itchy eyes, a cough, or even more serious effects like brain damage or death, in the case of toxic mold. Since HVAC systems circulate air throughout the home, any area of mold will spread with its dust and allergens, creating dangerous air to be breathing.

How to Spot Mold

Other than getting your HVAC system regularly inspected, the only way to spot mold is to either see it or smell it. To see it, make a habit of taking a look at your drip pans and coils. Even if you don’t see any mold, any condensation or pooling water can be a sign that the mold is either there and hidden or will soon form.

Other than visually being spotted, mold is usually discovered by its smell, which tends to smell like mildew. To make sure it’s your HVAC system that’s the culprit, temporarily shut off your system for 15 to 20 minutes. If the smell goes away or diminishes, it’s probably mold in your ductwork. If it doesn’t go away, your HVAC system is probably fine, but you should start investigating other areas of your home such as your pipes.

Fix the Problem

If you discover mold in your HVAC system, call a professional right away. Not only does the mold need to be removed, the problem that caused the mold also needs to be fixed. Considering its harmful impact on people’s health, mold is nothing to mess around with.
